What is the IB MYP?
The Middle Years Programme is an internationally recognized educational framework that encourages students to ask questions, investigate ideas, and construct understanding through exploration and reflection.
At its heart, the MYP places inquiry at the center of learning. Students are not passive recipients of information — they are active investigators who develop critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and conceptual depth through a student-centered, inquiry-based curriculum.
By connecting academic knowledge to real-world contexts and meaningful action, the MYP prepares students for the IB Diploma Programme and for engaged, responsible participation in a complex global society.
Core Features of the MYP
Nine interconnected elements that define how students learn, grow, and take action in the Middle Years Programme.
Inquiry-Based Learning
Inquiry is at the heart of the MYP. Students are encouraged to ask questions, investigate ideas, and construct understanding through exploration and reflection — developing critical and conceptual thinking that extends beyond the classroom.
8 Subject Groups
Comprehensive academic development across Language & Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals & Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical & Health Education, and Design.
Concept-Based Learning
Promotes deep understanding across disciplines through key and related concepts. Students transfer ideas across subjects and contexts, developing the capacity to think abstractly and make meaningful connections.
Global Contexts
Learning is connected to real-world issues and diverse cultural perspectives through six global contexts: Identities & Relationships, Orientation in Space & Time, Personal & Cultural Expression, Scientific & Technical Innovation, Globalization & Sustainability, and Fairness & Development.
ATL Skills
Approaches to Learning skills — communication, collaboration, research, self-management, and critical thinking — are explicitly taught and developed across all subjects, preparing students to be effective and independent learners.
Interdisciplinary Learning
Holistic education is achieved through interdisciplinary learning experiences that connect knowledge and skills from different subjects. Students engage in projects that allow them to explore complex questions and real-world problems from multiple perspectives simultaneously.
Service as Action
Service as Action connects classroom learning to meaningful action in the community. Students apply what they learn to real-life contexts, develop empathy, and become responsible and engaged members of society — understanding that learning has a purpose beyond the school walls.
Personal Project
The Personal Project is a significant independent research endeavor completed in the final year of the MYP. Students choose a topic driven by personal interest, demonstrating the ATL skills and attributes of the IB Learner Profile developed throughout the programme.
Criterion-Based Assessment
Each MYP subject uses specific criteria (A, B, C, and D) to assess different dimensions of learning: knowledge, skills, analysis, and communication. This approach ensures that assessment focuses on each student's individual progress and understanding — not comparison with others.
MYP Subject Groups
Eight subject groups ensure that students experience a broad and balanced education — each with its own specific purpose, skills, and assessment criteria.
Language & Literature
English · SpanishTaught in both English and Spanish, Language & Literature develops advanced communication, analytical, and critical thinking skills through the study of a wide range of literary and non-literary texts. Students explore how language shapes identity, culture, and meaning across different contexts and traditions.
Language Acquisition
GermanGerman is offered as Language Acquisition, supporting students in developing communication skills in an additional language while fostering intercultural understanding and global awareness. Students progress through proficiency phases — from Emergent to Proficient — building confidence in a real-world, communicative context.
Individuals & Societies
History · Geography · EconomicsStudents investigate the world through the lens of history, geography, economics, and social studies. They develop critical and empathetic perspectives on global issues and human experiences, learning to analyze evidence, form arguments, and understand diverse points of view.
Sciences
Biology · Chemistry · PhysicsInquiry drives science learning as students explore the natural and physical world through investigation, experimentation, and analysis. Students develop scientific thinking, laboratory skills, and an appreciation for how science and technology shape our world and raise ethical questions.
Mathematics
Standard & ExtendedStudents develop logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and mathematical fluency through real-world contexts and abstract thinking. Mathematics is approached as a universal language connecting all areas of knowledge — fostering accuracy, communication, and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems.
Arts
Visual Arts · Performing ArtsThrough visual arts and performing arts, students communicate ideas, emotions, and perspectives using a variety of media and techniques. Arts education at the MYP level cultivates creativity, self-expression, cultural awareness, and aesthetic appreciation — developing students as both creators and critical audience members.
Physical & Health Education
Sport · Wellness · Health LiteracyStudents develop physical literacy, health awareness, and personal well-being through a curriculum that values teamwork, resilience, and strategic thinking. PHE fosters a lifelong commitment to healthy, active living and helps students understand the relationship between their physical, emotional, and social health.
Design
Digital · Product DesignStudents solve real-world problems through the design cycle — inquiring, planning, creating, and evaluating. Design develops creative and critical thinking as students apply technology, innovation, and iteration to practical challenges, preparing them for a world where design thinking is an essential skill.
