Our Philosophy

Music as a Language, Not Just a Subject

Our music program is built on the conviction that every child is born musical. Through a carefully structured progression — from early rhythmic play to advanced composition and performance — students develop not only technical mastery, but also the deeper human skills that music uniquely builds: empathy, active listening, self-expression, and the ability to collaborate toward something greater than oneself.

Interpret

Students perform and interpret music with technical precision and emotional depth.

Create

Students compose and improvise — developing an original musical voice.

Reflect & Critique

Students analyze music historically, culturally, and critically — becoming informed listeners.

The K-12 Journey

A Progressive Musical Education

Each stage of the program is designed to build on the previous one — with every student moving through a structured sequence of instruments, skills, and ensemble experiences.

Early Childhood — Ages 3-5

Discovering the World of Sound

In our Montessori environment, music begins as sensory exploration. Children respond to rhythm, melody, and pulse through play — awakening their innate musicality before formal instruction begins. Music, movement, and listening are inseparable.

  • Rhythmic movement and body percussion
  • Singing and vocal play
  • Attentive listening and sound discovery
  • Performing, creating, and responding to music
Early Music

Primary — Grades 1-2

Rhythm, Beat & Percussion

Students enter the world of music through percussion — the most primal and immediate musical experience. They develop a rock-solid sense of pulse, coordination, and group awareness as the foundation for all future musicianship.

  • Hand drums, xylophones, and classroom percussion
  • Basic music reading and notation
  • Ensemble playing and listening skills
  • Cultural music exploration and appreciation
Percussion

Primary — Grades 3-4

Melody, Flute & Choral Voice

Students develop melodic understanding through the recorder/flute, then discover the instrument they always have with them — their voice. The choral experience teaches harmony, blend, and the profound satisfaction of collective musical creation.

  • Recorder and flute technique and performance
  • Sight-reading and music literacy
  • Vocal technique and choral singing
  • Two-part and three-part harmony
Choir

Primary — Grade 5

Musical Theater: Where Music Meets Story

Everything comes together on stage. Students integrate singing, movement, acting, and stagecraft in full musical theater productions. This year builds confidence, public presence, and the joy of storytelling through music — in front of a real audience.

  • Full musical theater productions
  • Performance skills and stage presence
  • Acting, choreography, and vocal performance
  • Collaboration, discipline, and creative courage

Primary — Grade 6

The Full Band: Convergence of Six Years

Grade 6 is a milestone: students bring together everything learned since Grade 1 and perform as a full instrumental band. They choose or are assigned band instruments, read full arrangements, and give a semester-end concert — a rite of passage that marks their readiness for secondary music.

  • Melodic and wind instrument performance
  • Full ensemble arrangement and score reading
  • Concert performance and program preparation
  • Transition preparation for secondary music
Full Band

Secondary — Grades 7-12

Musical Proficiency & Artistic Maturity

In secondary school, students deepen their specialization — developing advanced technique, music theory, composition skills, and cultural understanding. The program challenges every student to find and express their own musical voice, culminating in semester-end performances and original musical projects.

  • Advanced vocal technique and instrument performance
  • Music theory, analysis, and composition
  • Music history and global cultural contexts
  • Semester-end musical projects and recitals
  • Original composition and personal artistic voice

Ensemble Program

More Than Practice — A Community

Music at GVS is never a solo endeavor. Our ensemble program gives students the irreplaceable experience of making music together — building skills, friendships, and memories that last a lifetime.

Choir

Our choral program spans all school levels. Students develop vocal technique, harmonization, and the unique emotional power of collective singing — performing in Spanish, English, and German.

Percussion Band

Our rhythm ensembles teach students to anchor a musical group, developing timing, coordination, and the groove that drives every great performance.

Flute & Recorder Choir

A melodic ensemble that develops the ear, teaches music reading, and produces beautiful multi-voice arrangements — one of the most formative experiences in our elementary music program.

Melodic Band

Our flagship instrumental ensemble brings together wind, brass, and melodic instruments in full arrangements — requiring every member to listen, respond, and perform as part of a unified musical whole.

Musical Theater Company

A full-production performance company where students direct all musical, dramatic, and choreographic energy into one shared performance. The most visible and celebrated ensemble at GVS.

Trilingual Performances

Our concerts and showcases celebrate GVS's trilingual identity — with repertoire performed in English, Spanish, and German, reflecting our unique cultural roots and international outlook.
