We love competing and winning, but we also believe in something deeper. Here's how the Golden Valley School MUN program goes beyond conferences and simulations.
Many strong MUN programs focus heavily on preparing students to perform well at conferences and win awards. We share that goal. But we also believe that consistent success comes from developing strong foundations first.
Our program combines competitive preparation with long-term skill development and real community impact.
We Focus on Building Strong Foundations
Instead of preparing students only for individual conferences, we emphasize steady skill development throughout the year.
Our program includes a structured training series designed to build core debate and diplomacy skills progressively. Students work on frameworks such as Claim-Warrant-Impact (CWI), advanced argumentation, refutation techniques, and strategic negotiation.
This approach lets students develop strong foundations rather than spiking in performance for one event and then plateauing afterward. Research conducted by psychologist K. Anders Ericsson and his colleagues shows that deliberate, structured practice over time leads to significantly better long-term results than short bursts of intense preparation.
Leadership Is Developed Through Action
In our program, students don't just learn about leadership — they practice it. Older students take on mentorship roles with younger classes, building responsibility and emotional intelligence in the process.
Beyond the club, GVS MUN also leads school-wide initiatives that bring the entire school community together. Through these projects, students work on identifying real issues in their environment and developing practical solutions.
"Speak Up, Stand Together" — Beyond Simulations and into Real Impact
Many MUN programs stay within the world of simulations and role play. At Golden Valley School, we encourage students to apply their skills outside of committee.
Through our flagship project, Speak Up, Stand Together, students use their diplomatic skills to address bullying in our community. They conduct research, propose solutions, and work with teachers and administrators to create meaningful change.
This shifts the focus from practicing diplomacy to actually using it to improve their environment.
