The Hidden Cost of Bullying: Why It Demands Real Action

Bullying is a persistent challenge in schools worldwide. Research shows it has serious and lasting consequences for students, schools, and entire communities.

According to UNESCO's 2019 report Behind the Numbers, nearly one in three students aged 13–17 worldwide reported being bullied by their peers at school at least once in the past month.

And this problem is closer to home than you might think. Data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) indicates that Costa Rica has ranked among the countries with the highest rates of reported student bullying globally. In these global student surveys, 44% of Costa Rican students reported experiencing bullying, placing the country at the top of the list.

Schools with high rates of bullying also tend to struggle with lower attendance, reduced student engagement, and a weaker overall school climate.

Why Traditional Approaches Often Fall Short

Many anti-bullying efforts focus primarily on awareness campaigns that encourage students to "be kind" or "stand up to bullying." While these messages are well-intentioned, they often fail to create meaningful change, for two main reasons:

  • They tend to place the responsibility on students without giving them practical tools or structured ways to address the problem.
  • They rarely involve students in identifying the specific issues happening in their own environment.

When students are only told what not to do — without being empowered to analyze the situation and propose solutions — the problem persists. Real progress requires more than slogans. It requires understanding the root causes within a specific school community and developing targeted, actionable responses.

A More Effective Approach

Research consistently shows that the most successful anti-bullying interventions share common elements. They are:

  • Student-led
  • Data-informed
  • Focused on systemic change rather than isolated incidents

When students are actively involved in researching the problem, analyzing data from their own school, and developing solutions, they develop a stronger sense of ownership. This approach transforms bullying from an abstract issue into a concrete problem that students feel responsible for solving. These measures work best when they are supported by school leadership and integrated into the broader school culture.

Moving From Awareness to Action

At Golden Valley School, we recognize that bullying is not just a distant problem. That is why GVS MUN is committed to moving beyond simulations and taking meaningful action to address this issue.

The Path Forward: "Speak Up, Stand Together"

GVS MUN is launching Speak Up, Stand Together — our flagship initiative to address bullying within our own school and community.

Through this project, students take the lead in researching the issue, analyzing data from their own environment, and developing practical solutions. They work together to design awareness efforts, propose policy improvements, and collaborate with teachers and administrators to implement meaningful change.

By moving beyond simulations and applying their skills to real issues, students see that leadership and diplomacy are not just theoretical.
